I received a laptop this week where the owner normally played Minecraft without any issue. The game is normally played via the internet and relies on Java to be up to date. After trying Java updates and video card driver updates, the computer could still not open the game. I removed the drive and did a full chkdsk which opened a whole new can of worms. The drive failed and just started clicking. I installed a used hard drive and installed Windows 7. I then found that the computer had the Intel Mobile 965 chipset which is not compatible with the newer game versions. Trying to install older versions of the game along with trying different versions of Java didn't work either. Since I was told that the game did work on the laptop prior to the hard drive crash, I asked for the paperwork on the computer. It showed that the computer came with Windows Vista Home. The license normally on the bottom of the laptop wasn't there, it was with the paperwork. So I reformatted and installed Windows Vista along with all the updates and the game ran fine. I then cloned the drive and wanted to see if a Windows 7 upgrade would work. It didn't. I also tried removing the Windows 7 video driver and installed the Vista driver, that didn't work either. The computer runs the game fine with Vista. They are planning on buying a new laptop in the near future.
